Review: The Gold Bar

The Gold Bar, located within Bristol Harbour Hotel is branded as one of the the city’s most stylish and contemporary new venues. With great music and an enticing cocktail menu, we sent Caroline Wilde down to sample the intriguing bar...

As anyone who knows me would tell you, the opportunity for 24 hours in the wonderful city of Bristol for a frazzled mother of 3 year old twin girls – is honestly bliss!  So when a good friend and colleague asked me to guest review the newly opened Gold Bar in the Corn Street area of Bristol I nearly bit her hand off.

Far away from the traditional cobbled streets of the Corn Street area of Bristol, the Gold Bar is a hidden gem.  Nestled within the cool new Bristol Harbour Hotel & Spa, occupying the former Lloyds Bank building it oozes glamour and opulence.

Once inside there are three cosy lounge type, seating areas with wonderfully high ceilings.  This cool bar has a distinctive ‘members only feel’.  Fabulous furnishings, beautiful lamps…dark and intimate sums up this place.

This bar is all about the drinks, the weighty tome of a menu featured over 30 gins and a fantastic array of cocktails.  A place for a beer and snacks, this is not!   I opted for the flagship cocktail ‘Folis Aureis’ meaning gold leaf in Latin, the menu described it as smooth, cool, golden and luxurious’.  My husband kept it classy, choosing an old time classic The Old Fashioned.  After a quick discussion with the mixologist about his pallet, he scurried off to work his magic behind the gorgeous 1930’s style, well stocked bar.

The cocktails were divine, Rob’s Old Fashioned arrived in a cut glass, perfectly fitting with the ambiance, it transposed him into a member of the Mad Men cast….I digress! My Folis Aureis was delicate and delicious. The perfect start to our evening in the wonderful city of Bristol.
