Revealed: Bristol Makes the Top 13 as One of the Best Places to Live in the UK for Teachers

A recent study conducted by Randstad Education revealed the best places to live within the UK for teachers looking to save up for a home. Bristol came in at 10th of the top 13 for one of the best cities for teachers looking to settle down, which considers average salaries and property prices. This is based at looking at a price index for multiple locations in the UK, where a teacher could save a 15% deposit in the shortest amount of time.

Bristol was named as the best place to live in the UK in 2017, which might come as no surprise as it’s a city full of culture, with a beautiful waterfront setting. It’s a lively and charming city that’s committed to retaining its character and quirks, which helps to make it so unique. With a growing economy and some impressive developments like Bristol Temple Quarter, that are attracting companies and talented workers. The city has gone from strength to strength over recent years and it doesn’t look like it’s slowing down any time soon, with big brand shops and Europe’s longest street of independent shops at Gloucester Road.

Victoria Short, managing director of Randstad Public Services said: “Home ownership is the dream of most workers hoping to work their way up the property ladder but as our guide shows location influences how much teachers need to save to realise that ambition.

“It’s no surprise average house prices are highest in London and while the capital offers workers an attractive mix of jobs and lifestyle options, our guide shows where in the country teachers can do the job they love with the bonus of more affordable housing and cheaper rent.”

When it comes to education things are also looking positive for the charming city. The average teaching salary in the city comes in at around £25,500 and Bristol has one of the best average commuting times, of 25 minutes. Property prices are higher than the UK average, with the average being £307k but the stunning location is hard to beat and certainly shows as the happiness index for the city is 7.27 out of 10.

Schools have seen vast improvement as gone are the times where parents would move out of Bristol to find better options. Instead the city has seen an impressive turnaround in standards and Bristol is now in Ofsted’s top 20 authorities in the country. As it stands today, about 96% of all children in Bristol attend secondary schools rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted, an increase or around 35% from 2012 when the regulator changed its inspection measures.
