Your Total Guide To business

Running a 100KM is similar to running a business

Daniel Pettitt is the Creator and Co-Founder of Ottr Works. He took part in The Race to the Stones which is 100KM endurance challenge setting off from Lewknor in Oxfordshire and ending at the iconic Avebury Stone Circle. Trekking through the day and night, it is a true test of endurance to see if you can triumph like Daniel did in July 2019. Below he tells us what he learnt from the experience and how it is similar to running a business.

01. Run your own race. Don't follow the pace of others.

The horn blows and the adrenaline kicks in. Your mind is telling you to keep up with the fit people ahead but the body knows thats not sustainable. In business its easy to follow the steps of other people because it worked for them - post this, use this, do this... It works for them but it won't always work for you. Business and running is about working out what works for you, and utilising that.

02. It all starts with you.

I had to take the first step one day to go out and run 5km. I had to say yes to a shoot not knowing if I was capable. Self confidence and motivation will carry you in running and business. Say yes more, and set targets. Even if that means you sign up for a 100km with only 5 months to train.

03. Support comes in all forms - use it!

When out on the trails support came in many forms. From fellow runners, to cars beeping, and even the odd cow. Make the most of the world around you and use it to your advantage. I've been on shoots where things haven't gone to plan, but the support of someone beside me has put a positive twist on that situation and provided a better outcome. (Don't be a stubborn soul and reject the positivity of others, lap it up)

04. Taking risks will pay

Do I take the risk on not eating at 50km? Do I hand in my notice tomorrow and fully commit to going self employed? Do I take the risk of not changing socks every 20km? Do I take the risk of saying yes to this contract even though I'll be working 60 hour weeks? Without taking these risks you will never know the outcome. If its doable then give it a go.

05. Dedication and hard work is key

Waking at 0430 on a Saturday to run is horrible. Waking at 0400 on a shoot to capture a sunrise is it worth it? To get the best outcomes in running and business you need to be committed and ready to work hard. Those who expect it to happen will never succeed, those who make it happen, will.

06. When the going gets tough. Keep going!

At points I started to see stars. I felt lethargic. I wanted to sob for no reason. I was short tempered. But these times also helped push me towards the finish line. "Only 40km left", the pain I feel right now is temporary but I cannot wait to feel the elation when I finish. Sometimes in business when a contract isn't put your way, or the client is producing issues that aren't under your control, you need to find solutions to work around. Work out a way of sorting the issue, and keep on running!

07. Victory tastes sweet - make the most of it

There is no better feeling than completing a job, or running a 100km and knowing its something you are internally proud of. "This is the best edit I've ever done" "This is the furthest I have ever ran" - when moments like these arise, make the most of it and cherish what you feel. Remember these feelings when you are at the other end of this spectrum. Victory tastes sweet, and it needs to be shared.

Grab a can and cheers it with everyone.
