Bristol mums team up to raise over £1500 for Macmillan Cancer Support

A team of six Bristol mums have succeeded in raising over £1500 for the national cancer charity in the run up to Macmillan Cancer Support’s regional Wye Valley Mighty Walk on Saturday September 7. The team, all in their forties, arranged their own sponsored walk because they’ve all been affected by cancer, supporting friends and family through it.

One of the mums, Debra Penrice who runs copywriting agency, The Case Study Practice, said, “We wanted to join in with the Mighty Walk, however, because of childcare, we needed to fit the training in during term time and around work. It made more sense to organise our own walk on a date that suited us – and then raise awareness of the main event.”

Not quite a marathon distance, they walked 30 kilometres along the Wye Valley route between Chepstow castle and Monmouth town centre. Another of the team, Katriona Heaslip from The Parker Clinic in Bishopston where the mums are based explained, “Having supported friends and patients through different types of cancer, our efforts to do the walk felt like a great way to give something back. We all have healthy kids, yet some families aren’t so fortunate.”

The team was pleased to get the backing of Macmillan Cancer Support for doing their own walk. Debra said, “Their website made it simple to register our fundraiser and having our bright green T-shirts felt more official when we were asking for sponsors. It was fun to meet some other walkers wearing theirs out along the Wye Valley, training for the main event – to give each other a bit of encouragement.”
