Bristol Remembrance Day Parade and Service returns to Cenotaph

The 2017 Remembrance Day Parade and Service will return to the Cenotaph following a year away from its traditional setting.

Several city centre roads will be closed on Sunday, 12th November for the annual event with many road closures beginning at 6.00am.

The parade will be led this year by 7 Military Intelligence Battalion.  It will include other Reserve units, cadet contingents, veteran’s organisations led by the Royal British Legion, and other groups.

The parade will assemble on College Green, marching down to the Cenotaph on Colston Avenue at 10:30am, followed closely by dignitaries from across Bristol to form the Civic Procession.

The Ceremony of Remembrance, centred on the Cenotaph will begin at 11:00am with a two minute silence as a mark respect for those who gave their lives serving their country.

The parade will return to College Green following the ceremony with the Lord Mayor and Lord-Lieutenant taking the traditional salute in St Augustine’s Parade.

Councillor Lesley Alexander, Lord Mayor of Bristol, said: ‘’Remembrance Sunday holds a significant place in our nation’s conscience, a day when we collectively pay our respects to those brave men and women who gave their lives in service to their country. It is a day and an act that transcends race and religion, bringing people together across communities to give thanks for the sacrifice of others. In Bristol, as in many other places across the nation, we mark this day with respect and dignity.

“This year’s parade and ceremony marks a welcome return to the Cenotaph following last year’s event at Queen Square. I welcome all down to the city centre to witness the parade and pay their respects on this very important day.”

All are welcome to line the route to pay their and to participate in the service.

The area surrounding the Cenotaph has been remodelled by recent works to complete the city centre section of the new MetroBus route. Anyone wishing to attend should be aware of this change of layout as vantage points will differ from previous years.

Road closures will be in force from 6.00am to 12.00pm for the parade and service.  Alternative routes will be signposted for traffic during between these times.

Traffic will be held for a short time outside the Rupert Street car park at 11.10am to 11.30am as the parade marches back to College Green after the service.

A full list of road closures can be found on the TravelWest website at https://travelwest.info/travelupdates.
