Historic Corn Street hosts family-friendly street party

Historic Corn Street hosts family-friendly street party as part of Bristol Food Connections

Everyone is invited to join in the festivities on June 23rd!

Bristol's iconic Corn Street will come alive with the sights and sounds of live DJs and theatrical storytelling when Bristol City Centre BID hosts the Old City Street Party next month (June).

Held on the final day of the Bristol Food Connections festival, the street party will see Corn Street and Small Street closed to traffic so the local community can come together to enjoy the festivities and celebrate this historic part of the city. It will run between 11am and 5pm on Sunday 23rd June.

Expect children's theatre workshops, DJs spinning family-friendly tunes and plenty of face-painting.  Plus, throughout the day, a variety of eye-catching theatrical characters will roam the streets entertaining visitors with historical tales inspired by this ancient network of streets.  They will also give out maps that show the hidden architectural gems that tell the story of old Bristol.

Learn how to plant and grow at home with free workshops as part of a drive to get everyone growing their own. Children will have the opportunity to design their own plant labels and will receive a free packet of seeds to get them growing at home.

Food will be a major theme of the event, with traders on Corn Street selling plenty of tasty food and drink, which can be enjoyed on the go or alfresco within the specially-created outdoor eating areas with deck chair and bench seating.

Keith Rundle, from Bristol City Centre BID, which is organising the event, says: "This area is home to some of Bristol's oldest curiosities, from medieval vaults to the giant 18th century brass trading tables, known as nails, outside what is now St Nicholas Market, it is alive with fascinating stories. We want everyone to wander around this unique area, enjoy the free activities and sample some delicious food.  Since Tudor times, fetes and fairs have always been an important part of Bristol's historical culture so it seems fitting to keep the tradition alive with our own Old City Street Party."

Bristol City Centre BID (Business Improvement District) is funded by businesses and organisations within its area through a levy mechanism. The City Centre BID's sole purpose is to ensure that Bristol City Centre is increasingly known for its safe, attractive and welcoming look and feel by all those who come to work, study, visit and spend leisure time. It does this by introducing significant improvements for the benefit of its almost 800 levy payers. At the street party, the BID will host a BID Hub where people can come and find out more about what they do.
