UWE Bristol hosts successful Black History Month celebrations

Two weeks into Black History Month celebrations, a series of events organised by the BME Staff Forum at UWE Bristol have been hailed a great success.

Now in its 29th year, Black History Month is an annual nationwide initiative running throughout October that aims to unite local communities and promote knowledge of black and ethnic minority history.

The BME Forum has produced a calendar of inspiring events including concerts, films screenings, concerts, workshops and panel discussions.

Dr Marie-Annick Gournet, UWE BME Forum, said, “We’ve been delighted by the reaction and awareness created by the events so far as we’ve all worked really hard on this year’s programme. We’ve had a sell-out event at our See Me Now film and fashion event at the Arnolfini and it was great to see such diversity amongst the audience. We’ve had great audiences at the film screenings on Frenchay Campus.

“The Hall of Fame of prominent black historical figures we created across UWE campuses has been highly praised and it’s great recognition that at Bower Ashton, it will remain a permanent display.”

Still to come is the Renewal Choir, Gospel Workshop on Sunday 18 October, 18:00 – 20:30 at the Arnolfini. Places are going quickly, as Bristolians have the chance to express their musical side, by taking part in a free gospel singing workshop, with one of Bristol’s favourite community gospel choirs.   

A free evening of discussion, film and networking centered on the criminal justice system and the BME community will also take place on Monday 26 October, 17:30 - 20:45 at Frenchay Campus. Register here.

Professor Steve Neill, Senior Diversity Champion for Race, and Dean of the Faculty of Health and Applied Sciences, said, “Black History Month is an important moment in the University’s and the city’s calendar. It provides an opportunity for everyone to explore and learn about the culture and heritage of the African diaspora. At UWE, we see this as a core part of our commitment to diversity and inclusion.”
