How To Get Started Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Even for an experienced martial arts trainee, getting started with Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu can be somewhat daunting. The first step of the training is the main challenge and it is precisely where the chunk of benefits that this discipline offers, come from.

So...

Before you start the classes, look up jiu-jitsu gis on the internet; no need to go to a retail shop for your gi because you can always buy one online.

I remember when I first joined the Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu training class; there was an endless internal struggle, daily. I was keen to learn the art but felt lost at moments.

But with a few basics in hand, I got over all the stress in a little over a week.

And now, I am here to help all the Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu newbies to prepare themselves for a fantastic experience as they step into the class for the very first time.

Understand What Brazilian Jiu-jitsu Is All About

Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu is a self-defense martial art mostly based on grappling and submission holds rather than active striking. This art focuses on the skills of controlling and taking the opponent to

the ground. The art also teaches you how to gain a dominant position and use the techniques to force them into submission.

During the class, you will hear the terms like chokeholds, joint locks, submission holds, and ground fighting, be sure to learn the basics of these techniques before you step into your first training session.

Prepare For Your First Class

If you have decided to take up classes for Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu, you may have had an idea about the activities by watching UFC or Metamoris shows. Whatever it is that has inspired you to indulge in the activity, trust me, you are about to start a fantastic venture.

The next step is to call the gym or training center and inform them what you are looking for. Ask them for details about classes that are ideal for beginners. Or you can search online for “Beginner's BJJ" or "BJJ Fundamentals" classes. They are aimed at addressing the newcomers.

At the initial stage, you do not need to wear a uniform – the Gi. It is better to wear loose-fitted clothes. You can go for a pair of sweatpants and a clean t-shirt. Remember, you will be dealing with a lot of pulling and grabbing so put on clothes that you don’t mind grabbing on.

Also, take a pair of flip-flops and a bottle of water with you.

Remember there is one universal rule for BJJ gyms – no shoes on the mats!

So remove your shoes as you enter the gym premises, wear your flip-flops, and carefully follow the rules. While stepping on the mat, you will need to leave the flops behind. This is important for the hygiene of the players on the mat.

With all said, your packing list will should the following items:

  • A towel for drying yourself
  • A water bottle
  • Compression top or t-shirt (prefer loosely fitted)
  • Sweatpants
  • Flip flops
  • Personal care products that you might need while showering after the training

Preparing For The Lesson

The Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu lessons are divided into three parts: warm-up, drilling, and free sparring.

At some gyms, the warm-up includes stretching with some other specific moves. While at others, it will be a mixture of stretching, jogging, and other lightweight exercises. The gym might also want you to shrimp and perform many strange animals like movements (and no, they’re not as fun as they sound).

There is nothing to hesitate or feel embarrassed about; everyone at the BJJ has been through all of this. Although the move might look strange to you initially, you will soon release why they are used. Try to memorize each activity you perform during the warm-up. These are the basic movements you will see during training.

At times, the warm-up may be tiring.

What's important is never to give up. Take baby steps, push yourself, little by little, and do as much as you can. Remember, there is no need to get embarrassed if you need to stop or sit and rest for a while. You may stand in a large group of people who struggle with a warm-up for the first few weeks before starting their classes.

What Comes After The Class

After the class, you will need to do a light cool down from warm-up to the second of the third level of training. It is also fine if you do not feel the need for it. Your gym might ask you to stretch for a few minutes. Otherwise, you can do light movement to cool down.

Also, check with your gym if they offer a free trial period.

Get details about the trial period and decide if you want to sign up.

If you like sport, go for buying a gi to wear to different classes.

A Final Word

Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu is an engaging and aggressive sporting activity that demands higher physical exertions to deliver endless physical and mental benefits. But before you step into the gym, equip yourself with all the necessary knowledge about the sports and gadgets you might need during the learning process.

In this regard, you may also need to buy a gi to wear to classes. Your gym might have policies regarding the style and color that you should wear. It is important to understand the importance of gi in your Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu training.

If for any reason, you cannot try a gi, look for comfortable clothing.

Everyone who has had the experience claims that Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu is a great sport. Plus, it allows you to grow at your own pace. So it is entirely up to you how often you train. What's important is never to give up.

I wish you luck in your future ventures in Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu!
