The Netflix original series Bridgerton, adapted from Julia Quinn’s award-winning romance novels, has achieved global success since its releasewith drama fans around the world swooning at the modern-tinged regency-era exploits of the fictional familiesBridgerton, Featherington and more. The second season has recently been released to huge audience acclaim, with new romance and intrigue – this time focused on the forbidden love between eldest Bridgerton Anthonyand Kate Sharma, sister of Anthony’s fiancée-to-be.

The popularity of the series has even seen the emergence of an entirely new interior design obsession: regencycore. Move over cottagecore – your time has been and gone, and the people want opulence. Here, we aim to give it to you, with these interior design tips for turning your bedroom into a space worthy of Queen Charlotte herself.

The Colours

Bridgerton’s more stunning visual aspects relate to the colours they use in each episode – from the rich, opulent dresses of the balls and weddings to the very walls of the manor houses themselves. There are a number of winning ways you can take inspiration from the series to inform your sleeping space; each house in the series makes use of colour and design to say something about the family that inhabits it.

For example, the Featheringtons’ house is chock-full of pastel greens, with the brighter hues hinting at their flamboyant aspirations and the darker, more smoky greens belying the subterfuge to which they are accustomed. Lady Danbury’s house is a much more regal affair, with golds and peach underscoring her stateliness. Quintessential regencycore makes use of decorative trims and highlights. Gold-painted coving accentuates pastel walls, and if you have wood panelling then all the better!

The Furniture

Regency-era furniture is an exercise in embellishment, with all manner of ornate carvings and flourishes making each table and footstool a statement affair. Achieving a Bridgerton aesthetic on a budget is thankfully easy, with second-hand furniture shops presenting an inexpensive portal to all manner of antiquated items. A touch of gold here and there, and your bedroom furniture will be regal in no time.

If you have a little more money to spend, there are bespoke options that can suit your needs down to the ground. For example, you may have alcove space either side of a fireplace or chimney breast;ordering fitted wardrobes for your alcoves can complement your fireplace well, and reinforce the opulent look.

Accessories!

While your room’s colour scheme and furniture are instrumental in your journey to embracing regencycore, it is the finer details that make the final result all the better. Again, second-hand and vintage shops are your friend. Keep an eye out for brass and silver, especially in the form of candlesticks. A grandiose lightbulb chandelier can evoke the excess of the Regency era while retaining modern conveniences, and larger-than-life mirrors with gold detailing will ensure your room feels as big as a ballroom.
