McDonald's joins 'Bristol's Binning' campaign to reduce litter

McDonald’s join forces with Hubbub to boost campaign to reduce litter on the streets of Bristol. Involvement includes an influx of cash prizes on LitterLotto app just for Bristolians, free coffees to Bristol’s litter pickers, and playful designs on restaurant bins.

The recently launched anti-litter campaign “Bristol’s Binning” is increasing its efforts to get residents binning thanks to the involvement of local businesses.

McDonald’s restaurants across the city have joined forces with Hubbub to boost campaign efforts to reduce litter on the streets of Bristol.

Campaign partners Bristol City Council, Hubbub  and Bristol Waste launched Bristol’s Binning in early November with the roll-out of new eye-catching bins in litter hotspots. The creative bins feature bright colours, song lyrics, gaming motifs and playful puns to instil Bristolians with a sense of pride in keeping their city clean, with a focus of engaging with young people.

McDonald’s has earmarked £5,000 worth of instant wins on the free-to-use prize draw app, LitterLotto, for people who dispose of their litter in areas around the stores and across the whole of Bristol.  To take part, Bristolians are encouraged to download the app, submit a picture of themselves binning litter or recycling, and they'll be in with the chance of winning prizes from £5 to £250.

Alongside this, McDonald’s will encourage customers to bin their litter across six restaurants and drive-thrus in the Bristol area* with menu boards and bins dressed with the campaign’s puns and lyrics to draw attention. On December 13th between 12pm and 2pm, the public will be able to join staff in the first litter picks at hotspots close to the stores and be rewarded with free coffees for taking part and the chance for cash prizes through the app Litter Lotto. Anyone interested in joining the two-minute litter picks can register on the Eventbrite site.

Demonstrating that Bristolians can indeed be winning by binning, Emily won £100 by binning a discarded item of litter near one of the participating McDonald’s restaurants. She said: “I won £100 from LitterLotto in Bristol and I can't believe how simple it was! Look around you and you'll no doubt see plenty of litter on the ground...it's so easy to pick it up and bin it - and even better when you win a prize for doing so!"

Beau Zilesnick, Creative Partner at Hubbub said: “We’re pleased to see local business involvement boost the campaign, with more colourful bins and so many more prizes up for grabs for anyone binning their litter. Thanks to the support from local partners such as McDonald’s, we can engage with residents and visitors to Bristol in a fun way in locations we know are litter hotspots. We’re keen to speak with other interested organisations how they can get involved in ‘Bristol’s Binning’ and help tackle the 3,700 tonnes of litter collected every year in Bristol.”

McDonald’s franchisee, Mike Geurin, said: “I’ve admired the fantastic campaigns that Hubbub has run with McDonald’s over the last few years, and I’m delighted that we are able to help bring this exciting campaign to Bristol. Tackling litter in our communities is really important to me and to my team, and we carry out regular litter patrols from all our restaurants. But we want to go further, tackling the problem head on. That is why working with Hubbub and our partners at LitterLotto we are making it easier for people to in their packaging, as well as rewarding people with prizes when they do the right thing.”
