What is the Summer Solstice?

Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, and usually celebrates the ‘official’ beginning of summer. Back in time, pagans used to celebrate the summer solstice as it meant that long days, sunshine, and good harvests were on their way. Today, the summer solstice is as good an excuse as any to get outside and celebrate the good weather and the beginning of the summer months. One of the advantages of the UK being so far north is that we get to see the long summer nights. This summer solstice will happen on the Tuesday after Motions’ Summer Solstice garden party and we are expected to get a full 16 hours and 45 minutes of daylight between 4:43 am to 9:22 pm!

Celebrating the Summer Solstice

Many countries with Pagan history celebrate the summer solstice around the world. In Sweden they call it Midsommer, it’s a huge tradition and people will organise big garden parties, BBQs, and even host music festivals to celebrate the longest day of the year. They also have lots of traditional foods and the girls all wear flower crowns!

In Canada, they host a huge indigenous festival every year in Ottawa. It is a festival where they honour their descendants and the ‘First People’, giving respect to their ancestors and ensuring the indigenous culture and traditions lives on. Austria also celebrates it in a style that is similar to the 5th of November here in the UK. Austrians gather with friends and family and light huge bonfires around the country, they enjoy the midnight light and good BBQ food whilst sitting around the fire telling stories and having fun.

Although there are lots of fun ways to celebrate the summer solstice, it’s not always a big cultural event in the UK. If you want to celebrate the summer solstice without hosting a big party you can watch a summer solstice-themed movie or tv show, or even play summer solstice-themed games. There are plenty of online casino games available and some slots are even solstice-themed, such as ‘Solstice Celebration Slot’. With popular online casino sites, you can also choose from all the classics like roulette, and blackjack with many casinos offering enticing promotions, such as no deposit bonuses and free spins to get you started. Who knows, the summer solstice might just be the day to try out your luck with those big jackpots!

So whether you’re out at Motion’s Summer solstice garden party, wearing a flower crown in Sweden, hosting a BBQ, or playing games, it sure is a good excuse to celebrate summer.
