Dining at Dhamaka Indian Review

Our resident blogger Love for Bristol went to Dhamak Indian restaurant in Bristol to see what they had to offer. Read on to find out what she thought!

Last night I had the pleasure of being invited to dine at Dhamak Indian, a fairly new Indian restaurant on Corn Street. As stated on their website, 'Dhamaka assimilates the culture of India – vibrant colours, the street food and the amazing curries from all corners of India', I was intrigued to see how Dhamaka would differ from other Indian restaurants.

Arriving on a Wednesday evening the venue was very busy! We were welcomed and showed to our table by a friendly waiter, he explained the style of the menu. The menu consisted of on one side a range of tapas-like dishes of various Indian Street Food favourites ideal for sharing and the more traditional curries/special house dishes on the other. We opted for a selection of everything, for starters were ordered; Poppadums Basket, Chicken Katacos and Chilli Paneer with two cocktails, 'Orisaa Splitz' and 'Watermelon Smash.' The cocktails are two for £10 everyday 12-7pm.

I absolutely loved the Chicken Katacos, these are the adoption of Khati rolls of India to a Mexican open taco soft chapathi tortilla topped with a chicken kebab, salad, mint and tamarind sauces. The flavours were rich with interesting textures. The Chilli Paneer was also delicious with a nice spicy kick, this was part of the 'Indo Chinese Street Food' section. 'Indo Chinese' are dishes that have been inspired by Chinese cuisine in India. The Poppadums were smaller than we expected, I wasn't too keen on the Fruity Pineapple dip but enjoyed the Mint Yogurt and Mango Dips. The cocktails were really rich and definitely made an impact with the strong flavours of Watermelon and Ginger.

We were sat tucked away in the right-hand corner, I really enjoyed the atmosphere, the artwork,  colourful chairs and pretty lighting created a pleasant ambience.

For mains we ordered; Butter Chicken from Delhi, Chicken Madras, Butter Naan Bread and Basmati Rice. Unfortunately, when the mains came out we received a lamb dish instead of the chicken madras, this was quickly changed over though and an apology was given. Both main dishes were really delicious so this made up for the error, the portions were a good size too!

We left room for dessert ordering Apple Caramel Crumble and a scoop of Mango Kulfi (Indian Ice Cream). The crumble came with vanilla bean ice-cream that made the warm crumble amazingly good! The Mango Kulfi was both creamy and fruity in flavour, this worked really well.

We had a great evening enjoying some flavoursome food, I really enjoyed trying some of the Indian Street Food dishes. There were lots to choose from in this section, including platters, I recommend visiting if you are wanting to try something different from your classic curry dishes. Or why not order a selection of everything like we did!
